Last year, a number of transmitter-equipped owl's were released by the Moraine Preservation Fund and Latodami. Environmental Education Center. This application will allow you to view the tracking information for these owls. Just select an owl identification number to view the locations the owl's visited in the Google Maps interface.
The map's embedded controls will allow you to zoom in on the terrain for a specific date, or zoom-out to see owl's path. They will also allow you to choose between the satellite view, the map view, or a hybrid. Note that, at certain zoom levels, a red line will show up to indicate the bird's path. If you don't see this line, try zooming out to appreciate how the bird's range.
The time line control shows which days telemetry information was received, with the bars to indicate the number of reports that were received each day. Each month has it's own color, which matches the marker colors in the map.
Selecting a date will center the map on the location of the owl on that date. This can be done either by using the date selector, or by sliding the owl along the time bar. You can also get a 'bird's eye view' by clicking the 'play' button, which will cause the map to follow the bird's movements over time. Clicking the button a second time will stop the animation. (Note: to get a true 'bird's eye view' , you can uncheck the 'markers' box to show the map without the markers, and set the map to 'satellite view'.)
So have fun and see just how far these bird's have traveled.
