VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES. Latodami is always looking for individuals and groups interested in the out-of-doors.  We have many projects that need your talents and enthusiasm, whether it is one time, frequent, or special involvement such as for schools or scouts.  Field research, habitat improvements, art work, teaching, or program development are some areas that need your help.

A wide variety of volunteer service opportunities for individuals, families, scouts, and other groups. Trail and wildlife habitat improvements, invasive alien plant removal, litter pick-up, tree and wildflower plantings, and much more need you help.

MAY

 

BREEDING BIRD SURVEY – Bird identification hike – Public and group program

Saturday May 3

10 am to 12 pm.

Since 1950 there have been 240 documented bird species found in North Park with over 100 being breeding/nesting birds.  Come and be a part of our ongoing documentation of nesting bird species in North Park.  No experience necessary, just bring your binoculars and a smile!  Dress well for outdoor hiking.  Park and meet at the Nature Center Barn.

NEEDED ALL SEASONS

 

  • Volunteer Nature Center Hosts are needed to help staff the Latodami Environmental Education Center. Training is provided.

A Nature Center Host:

Ø      Greets nature center visitors.

Ø      Hands out trail maps, brochures and program schedules.

Ø      Answers questions about the exhibits, the Latodami property and the local area.

Ø      Assists with nature center operations, exhibit maintenance and minor cleaning.

Ø      Assists the naturalist with programs and special events.

 

  • Volunteer Naturalists are needed. Volunteer Naturalists are selected based on their experiences and interest in providing environmental education and/or interpretation programs. Training is provided.

A  Volunteer Naturalist:

Ø      Primarily assists Meg Scanlon with programs, guided hikes, school groups and special events

Ø      May lead programs and guided hikes at Latodami when appropriate

Ø      Must enjoy working with children and the out of doors and be available weekdays

 

 

 

 

ADOPTION PROGRAMS


SCHOOL, SCOUT, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS - Year round opportunities to learn, exercise, relax, contribute.

ADOPT A NEST BOX - Options to: build, erect, clean, repair, monitor, or develop educational information for: a variety of birds and mammals.

ADOPT A TRAIL – A wide variety of trail maintenance, improvements and educational activities. For more information please fill out this form. 

ADOPT A MEADOW – Help: clear overgrowth, expand, remove invasive plants, replant, build observation benches, develop educational information for one of our meadow, field, grassland or wetland habitats.

ADOPT A TREE - Select a tree from the nursery and plant it in North Park as a celebration of life, your family, the future or as a memorial for a loved one.

ADOPT A BUTTERFLY/HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN - Help to plant, maintain or develop educational programs for one of the butterfly/hummingbird gardens.

 

 

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

FIELD RESEARCH - Botanical identifications, wildlife population surveys, nesting box monitoring (wood duck, kestrel, screech owl, great horned owl, bluebird, bat), etc.

STEWARDSHIP - Clearing and maintaining nature trails, litter pick-up, conservation plantings for wildlife, wildflower and wetland sanctuary development, nest box construction and placement, etc.

ARTISTIC - Display case backgrounds, nature scene wall murals, nature craft activities, artwork to accompany children's story books, etc.

TEACHING - Assist in pre-school to senior citizen environmental programs at the Nature Center, in classrooms and nursing homes, etc.

BROCHURES - Help to develop hiking and nature trail guides, tree and wildflower guides, bird lists, etc.

CLERICAL - data entry, word processing, clerical/secretarial, website maintenance, email

GARDENING - help with the planting and maintenance of butterfly and wildflower gardens.

 

SPECIAL EVENTS - – greet, assist with set-up and take down of event, assist with various crafts/activities related to that specific event. Some special events include – Maple-Sugar Event, Earth Day, and regularly scheduled public programs.
